Required Skills

What kind of skills do you need to be considered for TES?

Clerical Applicants
The greatest percentage of our jobs are in the clerical field. Although training certainly is important, we must be sure our employees can meet the needs of the campus departments. For this reason, we need individuals who have experience working in an office setting. Successful applicants have the expertise to perform general office tasks, familiarity with word-processing software, and the ability to handle multi-tasking with ease.

When an application is received in our office, we review both the clerical supplement and the past employee history to make sure the applicant has both the skills and experience necessary to be a successful TES employee. If the application warrants further review, the applicant is asked to come to our office to complete a series of assessment tests. The test results and the applicant's experience determine whether the applicant will be invited to come to our office for an interview. The result of that interview determines whether the applicant is hired. Some critical positions will require passing a background check.

Technical Applicants
Some of our job requests are in the computer resource specialist and programmer fields. These applicants are selected by their ability to meet the needs of the departments. Job requests are usually specific as to the platform and software expertise required. While these job requests are not as prolific, they are certainly rewarding.

Occasionally, job requests arrive for other technical fields, such as laboratory helpers and animal technicians. Some critical positions will require passing a background check.

Service Applicants
Service positions on campus are for laborers and custodians. These applicants are screened by our staff to make sure they can handle a variety of tasks in all types of weather. These applicants might be doing anything from planting flowers to digging ditches to refitting laboratories. Before a service applicant can be hired, he or she must successfully complete a pre-placement physical. Some critical positions will require passing a background check. All of these applicants must have a valid California driver's license.
