How do I start the retirement process?

To start the retirement process, you will need to call your Benefits Office to schedule a retirement counseling appointment to meet with an analyst. We recommend that you do so 2-3 months in advance of your intended retirement date to allow ample time for processing and to assure no interruption in income. You should bring the following documentation to your appointment:

  • Birth Evidence: Required for each child under age 18 and for anyone you name as a Contingent Annuitant
    • birth certificate,
    • passport or,
    • certificate of naturalization (showing birthdate or age at certain year)
  • Marriage Evidence: Required if you are married and elect monthly retirement income
    • marriage certificate or
    • a joint passport showing date of issuance
  • Domestic Partnership Evidence: Required if you have a domestic partner and are electing monthly retirement income
    • California Domestic Partnership State Registration form or
    • if no State form, the UC Declaration of Domestic Partnership (UBEN250) plus supporting documentation

Your spouse is encouraged to attend the appointment.

NOTE: If you are a Davis campus employee, or a School of Medicine employee with an academic title, your Benefits Office is located in Davis, and you should contact UC Davis Employee Benefits.

If you are a UC Davis Health System employee, or a School of Medicine staff employee, your Benefits Office is located on the Sacramento campus. You should contact UCDHS Benefits.
