Interpersonal Effectiveness

Interpersonal effectiveness is the ability to achieve personal goals through healthy and constructive relationships with others. It includes (but is not limited to):

  • Self-understanding and acceptance
  • Self disclosure
  • Development and maintenance of trust
  • Managing interpersonal conflict
  • Recognizing and managing feelings (emotions)
  • Building relationships with diverse others
  • Helpful listening and responding to others

 

Typical presenting issues that suggest Interpersonal Effectiveness should be explored

  • Interpersonal conflicts
  • Intergroup conflicts
  • Underperformance
  • Pattern of complaints or concerns about someone or a group
  • Group processes getting ‘stuck’ or bogged down
  • Climate of tension, friction, or ‘chill’
