Personal Growth & Learning

Personal growth and learning is a kind of customized and self-directed learning process for the individual based on individual reflection and action, sometimes called action learning. It is an educational process whereby the participant studies his/her own actions and experience in order to improve performance. This may be done independently, with a coach or mentor, or with others in small self-organizing groups.

It is particularly suitable for adults, as it enables each person to reflect on and review the action they have taken and the learning points arising. This should then guide future action and improve performance. The approach stands in contrast with the traditional teaching methods that focus on the presentation of knowledge and skills.

Typical presenting issues that suggest Personal Growth & Learning should be explored:

  • An individual wants to learn more about how he or she can become more effective in certain situations
  • An individual identifies particular goals or objectives in work or personal life and wants to pursue them
  • An individual receives a pattern of feedback from others and wants to explore the feedback and how he or she can use it to become more effective in the future
  • An individual wants to understand more about the relationships between her or his own actions, mental models, and understanding of self in everyday life.
