Stress Response to a Critical Incident

Even though the event may be over, it is not unusual to experience some strong physical, psychological, and behavioral reactions to a traumatic event after the fact. It is quite normal for people to experience profound reactions after a traumatic event. These responses do not imply weakness or craziness. They are simply normal human reactions to abnormal events.

Symptoms of traumatic stress can vary from person to person. Some people will experience many symptoms, others just a few. These may include headaches, nightmares, fatigue, or poor concentration. The effects can even be cumulative over time. With Acute Stress the symptoms typically go away within a few weeks. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms call the Academic & Staff Assistance Program at 530-752-2727. The sooner treatment begins, the better the chances are for a full recovery.
