Home or Work Location Changes Can Affect Your Eligibility for HMO Medical Plans

Moving out of state or changing from hybrid to fully remote work can affect eligibility for Kaiser HMO or UC Blue & Gold HMO.

UC’s Live or Work Rule allows employees to enroll in an HMO when either their home address or primary work address is within the plan’s service area. If both the employee’s home address and primary work address change to a location outside the HMO service area, the employee will lose their HMO plan eligibility.

Before Moving or Changing Work Location

  • Employees: If you will have a home address outside the HMO plan area and you will be fully remote, please contact UC Davis Benefits at [email protected] to understand how the change could affect your medical coverage.
  • Departments: Work locations must be accurate in UCPath. Before submitting work location changes through AggieService, please give employees advance notice when a work location change could affect benefits eligibility

If an employee loses HMO eligibility, they have 31 days to elect a PPO plan: HealthSavings+ or UC Care. The local Benefits team is not automatically notified when UCPath drops coverage so employees should contact Benefits ahead of time.

Examples

  • An employee lives outside California but works hybrid with a Davis campus work location. If they change to fully remote work and their UCPath work location changes to their out-of-state location, they will lose eligibility for Kaiser HMO or UC Blue & Gold HMO. They have 31 days to elect HealthSavings+ or UC Care.
  • An employee who loses HMO eligibility and enrolls in a PPO cannot immediately re-enroll in an HMO if they return to the HMO service area. They must wait until Open Enrollment or another qualifying life event.
