Chancellor May with UC Davis staff

UC Davis’ Commitment to Staff Organizations

Sent by Chancellor Gary May to UC Davis supervisors and managers.

The UC Davis community gives life to our mission of teaching, research, and public service.  And it is the responsibility of each community member to help sustain a safe, caring, and collegial environment where employees can achieve their potential and the UC Davis mission is advanced.

The UC Davis strategic plan calls upon us to celebrate inclusive excellence and to value the contributions and aspirations of all members of the campus community – ensuring that students, staff, faculty, patients, and visitors from all backgrounds feel safe, welcome, included, and valued.

Much of the vital work necessary to create this environment is accomplished through staff organizations that have been founded by staff and sponsored by the University for the purpose of providing opportunities to build and strengthen both personal and professional connections that enrich campus community. The work that our staff does through these organizations is, in fact, work on behalf of the university and should be valued and respected as much as any other work. This is not “volunteer” work that an employee does in their free time, and we need to be sure that staff have time during their regular workday to perform this important work and serve the campus community in this way.

The purpose of this communication is to reaffirm UC Davis’ continuing and unwavering commitment to these staff organizations; to recognize the value of their contributions; and to ask each of you, as leaders, to do the same, which includes granting reasonable release time to participating employees.

Thank you in advance for supporting the amazing staff contributions at UC Davis and UC Davis Health. We are better together.

Gary S. May
Chancellor
